ABOUT Us

Our committees are the backbone of our organization, each playing a crucial role in advancing our mission.

RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS

Chair: Telos Whitfield  telosw@gmail.com

The Windham County Chapter of the NAACP Religious Affairs Committee  serves to build and maintain a strong relationship between the NAACP and religious communities, enlisting religious leaders and congregations to support civil rights through advocacy, fundraising, and social action initiatives. The committee educates faith leaders and members on the NAACP’s mission and the civil rights struggle, provides resources for faith-based social justice work, and promotes solidarity among diverse religious groups to advance equality and racial justice. We work with our local Brattleboro Area Interfaith Leaders Alliance, sharing information, education and support, advocating for justice, and working to  preserve our houses of worship as sanctuaries.

EDUCATION

Chair: Daniel Guerra  caspianguerra@gmail.com

The Windham County NAACP Education Committee advocates for and celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. We host an annual Art and Writing Contest for students that honors BIPOC heroes; we actively support students and families that have faced racial harassment in schools; we created a portable BIPOC library for Brattleboro Union High School. As the federal government continues to attack diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools, we are more determined than ever to fight for BIPOC folks here in Vermont.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Chair: Ann Schroeder  Schroeder.Ann@comcast.net

Our committee has a member who serves on the Vermont Criminal Justice Council and is a co-chair of its Fair and Impartial Policing committee. This keeps us connected to Vermont law enforcement. We also educate and encourage our members to advocate for important legislation with the Vermont legislature and Governor. You may have heard how in other states their law enforcement is cooperating with ICE. We advocated for a bill that was signed into law, S.44 (Act 28), Requiring legislative approval prior to entering into certain immigration agreements. In addition we correspond with prison inmates.

HEALTH JUSTICE

Chair:  Diana Wahle  dianawahle@gmail.com

BIPOC who live and/or work in Windham County thrive by successfully accessing high quality and equitable systems of care. This will entail: advancing racist-free, culturally-humble medical services; reinforcing community networks and resilience; and improving health outcomes for intersecting identities.

We have two work groups:

Health Care Workforce Development: Immigrant Inclusion & Support advocates for a vibrant healthcare workforce

  • Reduction of health care workforce shortages
  • Creation of clear pathways for internationally trained health care professionals to enter the health care workforce
  • Increased culturally sensitive medical practice; supporting more diversity in our healthcare work force

Co-Chairs: Ruth Steinmetz (ruth@steinmetz-vt.com) and Diana Wahle (dianawahle@gmail.com)

Antiracist Medical Practice advocates with the Vermont Medical Society for better BIPOC respiratory health as well as increased anti racist medical outcomes among medical practitioners. Chair Dr. Becky Jones (rebeccajones949@gmail.com)
